In My Suitcase: What I’m Packing for NYC as a Wardrobe Stylist

Comfortable, versatile, real-life clothing.

I’m heading back to New York City soon for a work trip that runs through the end of June. I’ll be meeting with personal shopping clients, shopping and sourcing pieces all over the city, meeting vintage collectors and walking, a lot.  It’s my favorite kind of work!

People always ask me what a wardrobe stylist packs for two months in the city so I decided to share a little behind-the-scenes of what’s going in my suitcase.

First of all, I literally draw out a plan for what I’ll bring. I leave in 8 days and I already have outfit sketches and (very questionable) drawings of pieces I’m considering. This outline is done and pencil and changes often… What can I say? I’m a Virgo and that, along with being a slightly obsessive planner is part of what makes me good at my job.

I have rules abouT the clothing I bring.

Everything I bring has to:

  • Be comfortable enough to walk (or bike) in for hours. My clothing must be breathable and my shoes MUST be comfortable. Everything I pack needs to hold up to long days on the move and, ideally, have pockets.

  • Transition from… shopping to meetings to drinks to dancing to dining to who knows! My day can start with a yoga class and end with a show with meetings and appointments in between so the clothing I wear must be versatile.

  • Reflect my personal style—In order to feel good I want to look good and for me that means a timeless style with a little edge that is on trend without being trendy.

I’m trying not to overpack. (Trying!) And, to be honest, I will be doing some shopping for myself while in NYC, all in the name of research, of course!

What’s Coming With Me:

The Colette Cropped Pant from Anthropologie

These Anthropologie pants come in a multitude of fabrics and colors. All of them are flattering and versatile and are a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe!

Zara Linen Button Down Blouse

Zara linen blend button down. Lightweight, versaitle, a little bit sexy.

A great (slip) dress

A simple dress like this is great for traveling! Dress it up with heels or keep it cute with sneakers. This is something that could easily be found at a thrift store and travel with you around the world. I bring multiple variations of this dress wherever I travel.

Madewell Barrel Jeans

On trend jeans that are actually comfortable and flattering.

A versatile jumpsuit

I love a good jumpsuit!

Birkenstock Sandals

I never leave home without my Birkenstocks….

A Vintage Jean Jacket

NYC weather is unpredictable; hopefully I won’t need a layer heavier than this!

A good sneaker

I walk so much in New York City! Comfortable sneakers that are actually cute exist these days and I’m happy to pair them with anything and everything.
