Plus Size Fashion
Recently, I’ve been hired to do personal shopping for some (beautiful) plus-size clients.
After meeting with them and listening to their grievances about shopping I felt a real sense of duty to provide them with quality clothing that was also fashionable.
“Plus-size” fashion is currently defined as any size bigger than 14. The average clothing size of women in the United States is 16.
Sample sizes, the sizes used to create prototypes for designer clothing, are made in a size 2 usually, sometimes 4.
In 2016, only 18% of clothing sold in stores was plus-size, according to NPD Group, a research firm.
It seems however, that the plus- size market is finally getting some well-deserved attention and in 2023, it is estimated to be worth 12.7 Billion dollars. Plus size models now commonly strut runways during fashion week and appear on the covers of magazines. Words such as “curvy” and “extended sizes” are commonplace and being “inclusive” is almost mandatory for brands.
But even with all of these strides forward towards inclusivity and equality, most retail stores do not carry anything larger than a size 12.
As I scoured stores in shopping malls, I realized that I would have to shift my focus to online shopping for the best plus- size clothing.
The best websites I found for plus-size clothing:
Mango - Affordable, cute and on trend. Pay attention to the fabric details if you don’t like polyester or synthetic fabrics. Great for accessories too.
J.Jill-Not just reserved for your aunt who lives in the countryside; J. Jill offers quality pieces with a timeless feel.
Anthropologie- Just like the original, but in plus size!
Nordstrom- Beautiful, quality, name brands in extended sizes.
Ganni- Limited selection, but those selections are super cute.
Tanya Taylor-Gorgeous clothes at a mid-high price range point.
La Ligne- Known for chic, comfortable knitwear.
Tips for Plus Size Shopping:
1.Know your measurements; Grab yourself a measuring tape, (and maybe a good friend) and measure yourself. The best plus size clothing (these days) is found online. If you know your measurements you can order the right sizes and shopping will be so much easier.
Key Measurements to know:
2.Know your body shape: Once you know your shape, you can dress in a way that’s flattering for your figure.
Pear/Triangle shapes are widest in the hip area.
Apple/Inverted Triangle shapes are widest in the waist/stomach area.
Hourglass Shapes have similar bust and hip measurements with a smaller waist.
Column/Rectangle shapes have have similar bust, waist, and hip measurements.
3.Fit is Key:No matter what size you are!
Consider using a tailor. When you find something that fits *almost* perfectly, a simple alteration can change everything. Become friends with your tailor and use them often.
Consider ordering custom. Most cities have custom clothiers that design made-to-order clothing. You can also ask your new BFF, the tailor.
4.Invest in quality pieces: Quality pieces are made to fit well and made to last.
5. Consider working with a stylist:
Stylists can help you find your style! A great stylist will measure you, shop for you and ensure you always look and feel your best.
A great stylist to work with, is Tracy Cyprow. :D
6. Start with a great foundation: Undergarments are very important!
Get fitted for the right size bra; you’ll be surprised how the right fit can change the way your entire outfit looks.
Consider shapewear like shaping panties or shorts. There are tons of options available now that are actually comfortable and wearing them is no longer taboo.
7.FEEL GOOD: This is THE most important!
If you look good, you feel good. No matter what size you are!
